Adrenaline

El corazón a mil por hora, la respiración acelerada. Necesito controlar los nervios, no puedo dejar que mi adversario los perciba. Le miro, él me devuelve la mirada desafiante. Pestañea dos veces. No soy capaz de distinguir si es un tic nervioso, un simple gesto o si pretende confundirme. Miro mis cartas, dos reinas.

Echo un vistazo al reverso de las suyas, intentando adivinar en vano su jugada. Sobre la mesa, cuatro cartas, dos nueves, un rey y un cuatro. No hay posibilidad de color ni escalera. Todo se juega a dobles parejas o un full. ¿Tiene un rey? Si tiene un rey estoy jodido, a no ser que aparezca una tercera señora.  El cabrón sube la apuesta, tiene el puto rey. ¿Es un farol? Los veo. Tengo el brazo izquierdo paralizado, primeros síntomas de un infarto. El crupier quema y saca la última carta. Mierda, otro rey. Momento de enseñar nuestra mano, me juego mucho.

Full, trío de reyes y pareja de nueves.

Mierda, a ver cómo devuelvo ahora los 100.000 que pedí prestados…

 

ENGLISH VERSION

My heart rate gets higher, my breathing speeds up. I must keep my nerves under control; I can’t let my adversary notice them. I look at him, he looks back at me defiantly. He blinks twice. I can’t tell if it’s just a nervous tic, a simple wink or if he wants to fool me. I peek at my cards: two queens, I glance at his, trying in vain to guess what he’s got. On the table, four cards, two nines, a king and a four. Flush or straight hands are off the game. It’s all up to a full house or two pair. Does he have a king? If he’s got one, I’m screwed, unless a third lady shows up. The bastard raises, he has the fucking king. Is it a bluff? I see them. My left arm is getting numb, first symptoms of a heart attack. The dealer burns one and turns the final card. Shit, another king. It’s time to show our hands, there’s so much at stake.

Full house: three of a kind, kings, and a pair of nines. Well, I wonder now how will I manage to pay back the 100,000 I borrowed…
